  14. I run a program that searchs for, and issues advisory cancels for,
  15. large binaries in the akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, and sci
  16. hierarchies.

  18. I have issued 28 cancels for large binary files (average size 226,215
  19. characters - total size 6,334,007 characters) posted to 14 different
  20. unmoderated discussion groups in the misc, comp, and rec hierarchies
  21. (with cross-posts into alt groups) as follows:
  22.    8 comp.security.unix
  23.    5 comp.lang.basic.visual.misc
  24.     alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc
  25.     comp.lang.c++
  26.    2 rec.arts.manga
  27.    2 rec.arts.comics.strips
  28.    2 rec.arts.comics.misc
  29.    2 rec.arts.comics.marvel.xbooks
  30.    1 rec.arts.comics.other-media
  31.    1 misc.writing
  32.    1 misc.wanted
  33.    1 comp.sys.sun.admin
  34.    1 comp.os.ms-windows.win95.misc
  35.    1 comp.mail.pine
  36.    1 rec.music.reggae

  39. The cancels in non-targeted groups are an unavoidable consequence of
  40. the way cancels work.  A cross-posted article has only one Message-ID.
  41. When it is canceled from one group it is canceled from all groups.

  46. If you want to see exactly which file was deleted from a particular
  47. group, read the full report in news.admin.net-abuse.announce.  Look
  48. for AR284 in the subject.  The full report can also be found in
  49. alt.nocem.misc and alt.retromod.

  51. The criteria used to search for this batch of large binaries were:
  52.    NEWSGROUPS: Unmoderated akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, or sci
  53.            (except for comp.binaries.apple2 and rec.games.bolo)
  54.    BINARY: (base64, binhex, uuencode, and xbtoa encoded files, etc.)
  55.    SIZE: > 100,000 characters (size * number of parts, if multi-part)
  56.  
  57. If you must post a binary to Usenet, please post it *only* to an
  58. appropriate binaries newsgroup such as alt.binaries.misc, and do *not*
  59. crosspost it to non-binaries groups.  This permits news administrators
  60. and users to decide for themselves whether to receive binary files.
